Minimally-Invasive Bariatric Surgery

Minimally-Invasive Bariatric Surgery

More than 99 percent of the bariatric procedures at Bon Secours Surgical Weight Loss Center are performed laparoscopically, which is a type of minimally invasive surgery. Using the laparoscopic technique, our experienced surgeons make a very small incision in the abdominal wall to insert a small video camera and surgical instruments. A video monitor is used to perform the surgery. Some procedures need a single incision, others may require several small incisions.

Although a few patients still require an “open” procedure to provide the surgeon access to the abdominal cavity, the majority of our patients can have minimally-invasive bariatric surgery. Not only do patients recover and heal faster with laparoscopic surgery, they typically experience less pain. The type of approach appropriate for a patient depends on their medical and surgical history.

Benefits from the minimally-invasive technique include:

  • less discomfort
  • shorter hospital stay
  • earlier return to work
  • decreased scarring
  • reduced occurrence of wound infections, hernias, and pneumonia
  • less scarring

All of our bariatric surgeons have extensive experience performing laparoscopic bariatric surgery.
