Celebrate National Margarita Day With Healthful Dining Choices
Practically every type of food and beverage has its own national day of observance, and tomorrow it’s the margarita’s turn. Our social feeds are likely to fill with memes expanding upon the “it’s five o’clock somewhere” theme with entreaties to cut work early to celebrate. When you’re trying to manage your weight, these messages can serve more to frustrate than amuse, but your weight loss journey doesn’t have to take a detour.
A night out with friends or family at a Mexican restaurant promises lively conversation, a festive atmosphere, and plenty of food. Dishes laden with beans, cheese, and rich sauces may come to mind, but many chain and independently-owned eateries do offer health-conscious choices.
Simple substitutions when you order can help reduce the overall calorie content of your evening. Since Mexican restaurants tend to offer a large variety of sides and options, weight management is doable without too much difficulty. Asking for corn tortillas instead of flour, black beans instead of refried, and salsa instead of sour cream can improve the nutritious quality of your meal.
If you intend to begin the weekend toasting friends with a salt-rimmed glass, here are more items to consider for your plate.
Say no to queso. Seconds after you sit, somebody will place a bowl of chips on the table. A side of molten, delicious cheese dip would go great with this appetizer, but not so much the calories and fat content. If you indulge in a few chips while waiting for your meal, stick with the salsa or ask the table to share in a dish of table-side guacamole. When it’s made fresh to order, you can control the ingredients.
Opt for the soup. Many restaurants offer a tortilla soup made with a broth base, vegetables and/or grilled chicken, garnished with avocado slices. It’s just as filling as chips and dip, and the avocado adds some “good fat” into your meal. It works as an appetizer or as an entree with a small side.
Go fish! Grilled fish or shrimp tacos with shredded cabbage, ceviche with cilantro and jalepenos, grilled mahi or salmon topped with pico de gallo…all tempt the palate without the guilt.
As for that margarita, the one reason you’re going out to eat? If you imbibe, enjoying a small glass is preferable to splitting a pitcher where you may feel obliged to finish off leftovers. You may also want to consider forgoing the margarita mix altogether and just ordering a shot of tequila or mezcal, which are lower in sugar on their own.
