The FDA approved LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System helps you gradually lose and control your weight by reducing the amount of food that your stomach can hold at one time. The name “LAP-BAND” comes from the minimally invasive surgical technique used (laparoscopy) and the silicone gastric band placed around the top of the upper part of your stomach.
How Gastric Banding Helps You Lose Weight
The silicone ring is surgically inserted and placed like a belt around the upper portion of your stomach. The ring – or band – is connected by thin tubing to an access port just beneath the skin’s surface. Through this port, the surgeon adjusts the fit of the LAP BAND by inflating or deflating its inner lining with saline solution.
This procedure does not significantly alter normal digestion and food absorption. Food passes through the digestive tract in the usual order allowing is to be fully absorbed in the body.
Your stomach capacity is reduced. You feel full sooner and stay full longer, so you eat less and your body starts using excess fat supply for energy. With gastric banding, most patients experience an average weight loss of one to two pounds per week until their goal weight is met.
In clinical trials, experts have found that gastric banding can help patients resolve chronic health conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obstructive sleep apnea.
