Gastric Banding
The FDA approved LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System helps you gradually lose and control your weight by reducing the amount of food that your stomach can hold at one time. The name “LAP-BAND” comes from the minimally invasive surgical technique used (laparoscopy) and the silicone gastric band placed around the top of the upper part of your stomach.
How Does Gastric Banding Work?
The silicone ring is surgically inserted and placed like a belt around the upper portion of your stomach. The ring – or band – is connected by thin tubing to an access port just beneath the skin’s surface. Through this port, the surgeon adjusts the fit of the LAP BAND by inflating or deflating its inner lining with saline solution.
Your stomach capacity is reduced. You feel full sooner and stay full longer, so you eat less. With gastric banding, most patients experience an average weight loss of one to two pounds per week until their goal weight is met.
