While it’s never a good idea to give in and eat whatever you want during the holidays, many people find moderation is the key to enjoying the season without gaining unwanted pounds. Here’s another secret: staying physically active can help burn those extra holiday calories.

Try these strategies to fit exercise into your holiday schedule.

Plan your workouts each week.

It’s a busy time of year, but it doesn’t mean you should stop your workout routine. Make sure you stick to your exercise goals by scheduling your workouts into your week. Remember, setting aside time for exercise can also lower any holiday stress and help you sleep better at night.

Incorporate physical activity into your holidays.

It’s easy to stay active during the holidays when you make them a part of your celebrations. Organize a family outing to the ice skating rink or take an evening walk outside to enjoy the holiday lights. If you have family visiting, ask your local gym if they have guest passes.

Take your shopping to the mall.

Instead of buying presents online, try shopping at local stores and malls where you can walk off any holiday calories you want to burn. Save time trying to find a parking spot by heading for the ones furthest away. The extra time you spend walking from the parking lot can add up to a full day’s worth of physical activity. Ideally, you should exercise 150 minutes every week.
