Weight Loss Dietary Supplement: Beware Hidden Ingredients
In fact, some dietary supplements contain pharmaceutical ingredients that are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
A recent analysis found that 776 dietary supplements flagged by the FDA contained unapproved pharmaceuticals. The majority of these supplements marketed three areas: weight loss, muscle building and sexual enhancement. The analysis, conducted by public health researchers in California, appears in JAMA Network Open.
Unfortunately, many of these supplements remain on the shelves at vitamin stores. That’s because federal authorities regulate dietary supplements differently than pharmaceuticals. Additionally, dietary supplements are not tested before they’re sold. The FDA relies on companies to voluntarily recall a supplement if there’s a problem. Consequently, only half of the 776 supplements in the recent analysis were recalled.
The most common unapproved ingredient found in the weight loss dietary supplements was sibutramine. Sibutramine was licensed as the medicine Reductil until 2010. It was taken off the market in Europe and the United States due to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes associated with the use of the drug.
Many people turn to a weight loss dietary supplement at some point in their life. It’s easy to understand why. Losing weight – and keeping it off – is not easy. About half of all adults nationwide say they’ve taken a dietary supplement. Weight loss is one of the most common reasons.
