Best Exercise: Man’s Best Friend?

Posted: October 5, 2017

best exercise, man's best friend, walking, walk, weight-loss, Bon Secours Surgical Weight Loss CenterThe best exercise for your weight-loss plan will depend on many things. We are all different. Some people like to swim laps. Others would rather use an elliptical machine at the gym. If you’re just starting a workout routine, the best exercise for you may be to simply walk.

This is where your dog becomes the best workout partner ever.

First of all, almost all dogs want to go for a walk every day. Your dog isn’t going to text you 30 minutes before your walk with a lame excuse for staying home. Your dog isn’t going to complain that you’re walking too fast or too slow. And your dog isn’t going to care which route you take or want to talk about politics.

Even better, your dog will give you guilty looks if you don’t take them for a walk.

When you’re trying to consistently work out, walking the neighborhood can be the best exercise because it’s convenient and only requires a good pair of sneakers. The number of calories you burn will depend on how much you weigh, how long you walk and how fast.

You may need to start slowly, but if you walk every day, it won’t take long before you notice that your legs feel stronger and you can walk longer than the week before. Your dog will get in better shape, too.

You can keep track of how far you walk by wearing a fitness tracker. Many health professionals recommend getting at least 10,000 steps every day. That may be too many steps or not enough, depending on your fitness level. Make sure to consult your health provider before starting any exercise program.

If you’re planning to have weight-loss surgery, exercise plays an important role in keeping the weight off for good. No matter what type of surgical weight-loss procedure you have, you will need to make exercise a part of your normal daily routine.

Taking the dog for a walk is an easy way to make sure you get your exercise in for the day.
